2024 Insights: Dominance of Almonds, Cashews, and Walnuts in Global Tree Nut Production”

Leading the charge in macadamia production is South Africa, which has consistently accounted for an average of 29% of global output over the past five years. In 2024, it is expected to produce around 28,800 metric tons on a kernel basis, representing a substantial 32% of the total production. The country’s favourable climate and investment in macadamia orchards have positioned it as a dominant player in the market.

Following South Africa is China, contributing approximately 19% of global macadamia production with an estimated output of 17,400 metric tons. The rise of macadamia cultivation in China reflects the increasing consumer interest in healthy snacking options and the nut’s versatility in various culinary applications.

Australia also maintains a strong foothold in the industry, producing around 17,300 metric tons or 19% of total output in 2024. As one of the original producers of macadamias, Australia has cultivated a rich history and expertise that continues to drive its contribution to global supply.

Kenya plays an essential role as well, with an estimated production volume of 8,800 metric tons, which accounts for about 10% of global output. The country’s favourable growing conditions and support for smallholder farmers have facilitated its emergence as a key producer in recent years.

Finally, other countries collectively contribute to the remaining 19% of macadamia production worldwide. This diverse range of producers highlights the nut’s growing appeal across different regions and markets.
